Notice Deadline Approaches for Existing Short-Term Rentals in the LUPC’s Service Area

AUGUSTA – July 11, 2026, is the deadline for owners of existing short-term rentals in the Land Use Planning Commission’s (LUPC or Commission) service area to provide notice of their short-term rental to the LUPC. This includes short-term rentals that were operating prior to January 12, 2026. The LUPC’s service area includes Maine’s townships (unorganized territories), many plantations, and a few towns. There is no fee to file this notice.

The LUPC enacted the notice requirement to better understand short-term rentals in the areas it serves, communicate best practices for renters and operators, and help address complaints. Key points about operating a short-term rental in the LUPC’s service area include:

  • A short-term rental is the rental of a single-family home or residential campsite to a person or group for periods of less than 30 days.
  • No permit is required to operate a short-term rental, but notification is mandatory before operating a short-term rental.
  • Short-term rentals in existence prior to January 12, 2026, must provide notice to the Commission on or before July 11, 2026.
  • No cost for filing the notice.
  • An online submission system has been developed for convenience.
